  43. 1.      Disk contents
  44.  
  45.     Since most of the file are compressed, their names are slightly
  46.     different (a trailing _). Please note that you CANNOT only copy
  47.     the disk to you hard disk. (Refer to the 'First time
  48.     installation')

  50.     The disk directory \WINNT35 contains the following files:

  52.     README.TXT      The file you are reading
  53.     LIESMICH.TXT    German version of the file README.TXT
  54.     DISK1.          Identifier for the first disk
  55.     OEMSETUP.INF    Script file for Microsoft SETUP.EXE

  62. 2.      Requirements
  63.  
  64.     It is required that WINDOWS NT 3.5 is properly installed on your
  65.     machine and that it runs correctly in standard VGA mode.
  66.     To do so, you have to follow the standard MicroSoft NT
  67.     installation procedure.
  68.  
  69.     For VL-PRO boards there is a limit of 120MB memory for the
  70.     main board.

  75. 3.      First time installation
  76.  
  77.     After installing the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows NT 3.5 for
  78.     the first time, the system will come up with a resolution of
  79.     640*480 pixel at 256 colors and 60Hz screen refresh.
  80.  
  81.     NOTE    To install the ELSA drivers, use the typical installation
  82.         procedure as described in the Microsoft Windows NT
  83.         manual.
  84.  
  85.     Open the "Control panel" window in the "Main" program group
  86.     and select "Display" to start the "Display Control Application".
  87.     Click on "Change Display Type..." and select "Change..." in the
  88.     upcoming "Display Type" dialog. A "Select Device" dialog appears
  89.     where you can see the already available device drivers
  90.     (Listbox: "Models").
  91.  
  92.     NOTE    The entry "ELSA Winner 1000" in this listbox will
  93.         install the general purpose S3 driver designed by
  94.         Microsoft and NOT the ELSA drivers!
  95.  
  96.     Choose "Other..." to install the ELSA drivers. Windows NT
  97.     prompts you to enter a path where it can find the drivers.
  98.     Change the default "A:\" to "A:\WINNT35" and confirm with "OK".
  99.     The "Select Device" dialog's "Models" listbox is now extended
  100.     by an ELSA specific entry: "ELSA WINNER Vxxx". Highlight this
  101.     entry and click on "Install".
  102.  
  103.     IMPORTANT       A simple "OK" at this point will discard
  104.             your selection.
  105.  
  106.     Please confirm the "Installing Driver" box and select "New"
  107.     in the "Windows NT Setup" dialog to ensure that the new drivers
  108.     will be loaded. Select the "Installing Driver" box and the hint that
  109.     the driver couldn't be started dynamically.
  110.  
  111.     NOTE    With Windows NT 3.5 graphic drivers cannot be loaded
  112.         dynamically. This is not an ELSA limitation.
  113.

  115.     To activate the ELSA driver, please press "Restart Now",
  116.     otherwise select "Don't Restart Now".
  117.     When you've selected "Restart Now", the system will reboot and
  118.     the initial installation is finished.
  119.  
  120.     NOTE    Windows NT 3.5 will now restart in a resolution of
  121.         640*480 pixel at 256 colors and 60Hz refresh. To change
  122.         this resolution use the "Display" application (refer
  123.         also the following chapter "4. Changing the resolution
  124.         after installation").

  129. 4.      Changing the resolution after installation
  130.  
  131.     Start the "Display" dialog, it's "Display Settings" gives you
  132.     the chance to adjust 4 parameters.
  133.  
  134.     - The "Color Palette" contents selections from "256 Colors" to
  135.       "True Color" depending on the "Desktop Area".
  136.     - The "Desktop Area" depends on the "Refresh Frequency" and
  137.       the "Color Palette".
  138.     - The "Refresh Frequency" allows you to select various refresh
  139.       rates.
  140.     - The "Font Size" lets you select large or small fonts.
  141.  
  142.     NOTE    The "Font Size" selection appears only when you
  143.         have installed Windows NT with English language
  144.         settings.
  145.  
  146.     After selecting a new graphic mode you can check this mode for 5
  147.     seconds. If the test screen is OK, then select "YES". Otherwise
  148.     select "No" and make another selection. Now the well known
  149.     "Display Settings Change" box reappears where you have the
  150.     choice to "Restart" the system or not.

  155. 5.      Multi-board support
  156.  
  157.     This ELSA driver for Windows NT 3.5 no longer supports multiple
  158.     displays. Dual screen support is now available with the 3.5x.00.xxx
  159.         drivers.

  164. 6.      Hints
  165.  
  166.     These are the current version numbers of the drivers:
  167.     - WINNER.SYS    : 3.01.00.030
  168.     - WINNER.DLL    : 3.01.00.030
  169.  
  170.     NOTE:
  171.     - The driver cannot run on a system where a Com4 port
  172.       is installed!
  173.     - Becaus most of the VL motherboards map only 128MB of
  174.        physical address space, the WINNER boards are mapped at
  175.       64MB (on VL bus). For this the main memory is restricted
  176.       to 64MB.
  177.     - This version is no longer capable to support multiple screens.
  178.        Dual screen support is now available only with the 3.5x.00.xxx
  179.       drivers.

  182.     List of fixed bugs (Build 019):
  183.     - The system hang in the test screen of 1MB boards is fixed.
  184.     - Boot problems on machines with AWARD bioses (invalid PCI
  185.       base address) are fixed.

  187.     List of fixed bugs (Build 020):
  188.     - Cursorproblems (black rectangle) at ISA/EISA boards are removed.
  189.     - The font representation at 24bpp (packed pixel) is OK now.
  190.     - There is no limitation in the number of resolutions using Pro/X
  191.       boards.

  194.     - Starting NT with a "half" screen or returning from a full screen
  195.       dos box with a black menu bar on S3 928 boards is now fixed.

  198.     - Problems with mask blits under ISA/EISA boards (HCT) are now

  202.     - Cursor problems running a WINNER 1000 AVI in 24 bpp packed pixel

  207.     - 1532 and 1600 resolutions are now available for 16bpp.
